BelgaBass
Приєднався 31 жов 2011
Old school '70s-'80s disco, funk, soul and latin, played on vintage electric basses and Ampeg Baby Bass, played by a guy who grew up on this music and assimilated it into his veins. I am not aiming for technical perfection, but to reproduce the authentic vibe of songs using a tone and feel as close as possible to the original sound. Without amp, effects or post-production.
I was active 1983-2012 as a live bass player in a whole range of styles, mainly covers/ethnojazz/70's-80's disco-soul-R&B, and later also got into Latin music and salsa and was the only Belgian bass player to play live with Cuban bands in Belgium from 2003-2012.
Available for online recordings.

Low quality video - keeping the time up and the groove going is the most important thing here.
Mean snappy sound of the Sabre neck pickup.
Music Man Sabre '80 - roundwounds - neck pickup - high+low 7/10 - played through Phil Jones Session 77 combo with flat EQ (but built-in compression) - recorded with smartphone onboard mic

Hot Water - Level 42 (1984) - NO SLAP ! bass synth playalong

I was 21 when it came out and I have King-slapped extensively from 18 until 35... so no King-slap anymore, but my newly developed thumping/chucking technique applied to a very busy but solid bass synth riff. Second take. Jazz Bass '78/'80 with semi-old roundwounds straight into Audiobox VSL22 into Reaper added ReaComp and ReaEQ (some prefab setting)

Another useful application of the pull/slap technique I developed over the last few years. Allows me FINALLY to nail bass synth riffs ! (without any effects). Due to tuning down, the string tension is extra-loose, so attack more difficult to control and to produce a consistent tone when pulling. The high octaved part every 4 bars is actually humanly not possible to play correctly every time, un...

I have quietly developed this technique over the last few years, it stems somehow from B.Edwards' chucking technique, in that you use thumb and index both to strike the note. But it has a more choking effect: the pull is immediately muffled by the thumb slapping. It's not new, see e.g. Cassiopea's bassist in the 90's already used it a lot. This song was quite a hit on the dance floor in the 80'...

Just uploading some short snippets of riffs I come up with jamming at home. Mostly stuff not easy on the fingers, with uneasy patterns or tricky timing. Music Man Sabre '79 both pickups EQ 80% through Phil Jones combo S-77

Many other "compare" videos do not do justice to the instruments or their tone, because people tend to use all kinds of amps, preamps, effects, manipulation software that hide and confuse the authentic tone... so here is an honest, real-life straight-from-the-jack sound demo of a vintage '79/80 Music Man Sabre, played fingerstyle. (79/80 is the original one, pre-EB, people !) Bass has old-ish r...

Imitating 80's synth bass using slapping

In my early 20's I lived through this era as a developing musician, when the Linn drum took the studio and production world over and bass synth became de vigueur. Already having a heavy preference for older black music (Chic, EW&F), I watched in horror how the music industry and pop charts were quickly being taken over by electronic songs in all kinds of genres. Many new artists rose to the top...

In my opinion one of the best Chic songs--at least for me!
That was good!💯💪🏾
Perfect
Viejo pero deja q las cuerdas sueñen. Tu las apagas y no es aai
this raking is amazing !
Totally adore this track! You nailed it 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing pbass sound
Thank you.
Wonderful bassist
Wonderful, fantastic
Wow! This bass player has the gift! Sounds awesome!
I could watch this guy play this song all day! RIP Bernard Edwards, thank you for the greatest gift - your music!
I got a 77/78 stingray with flats but it doesnt sound like that! Your sounds so punchy and full. JEASLOUSSSS! Mine sounds pretty much exactly like the Chic Bernard Edwards tone Ive heard in on the Chic stems . Yours sounds better, more full and punchy
Oh... I was hoping mine sounded more like the stems :). My Stingray has the deep-pocket long-pole pickup, and has been refinished in a hard lacquer by a previous owner, that's maybe the difference. My recordings are done without any pre- or postprocessing (not even EQ except where mentioned in the video description), the only mod is the compression that UA-cam applies when uploading/playing.
@@BelgaBass Ahh got ya! Very interesting. Yours sounds more consistent and full bodied to my ears. Im listening through some high end monitors though so some of this stuff may be quite subtle on other speakers maybe im not sure but your bass and playing sounds fantastic! I love it!
God I love the bass, fantastic job, do you think you could do it again this year? It's been 10 years lmao
Well, I already did, on a white Stingray using flats, you can look it up in my channel.
Jerry Madera would love this rendition of the song !
You are superbad my man. Old school music is where it's at. Has meaning keep up the good work.
PLAY IT HOMIE
Awesome! I came here wondering what a Stringray would sound like with flatwounds and now I know I want one. Great playing.
Can we maybe crowdfund a bass tab?
🔥🔥🔥🔥😁😎
Mucho sabor pero no sé ve quien ejecuta el Baby
Badass bro. Funk drummer who absolutely loves funky cats like you. Respect from a fellow funkhead in New Zealand.

Bravo
Killer tone ffs👀👌🙏
Just coming across this! Where have you been? Excellent performance. Luv'n it!
Slamming bass tune
Awesome
Perfection.
Is that a 79 Sabre?
Yes indeed. I have 3 '79 Sabres, all original, except the dark walnut colored one which has a modified phase switch circuit (by some previous owner). The one in this video is the one I have used extensively and exclusively during my 20 +/- live career on stage 1990-2010. The other natural colored one (e.g. used here ua-cam.com/video/c4IgNIcOYUc/v-deo.html) sounds somewhat crispier and has longer sustain. I attribute this to the fact that It has a neck (or body I forgot) date of 1980, so is one of the last series built by Music Man itself before becoming Ernie Ball. I've always thought of it as the last, best parts of the wood that were kept in the MM factory. At a point in time during the late 90's, after my first '79 Sabre was stolen, I collected about 12 '79 Sabres, all purchased on eBay, mostly from the US and a few of them from Germany. I have then extensively swapped bodies and necks to find combinations with the least fret buzz, which is the only grudge I have against Sabres, who are otherwise my lifelong favorite on-stage and home favorite basses. I kept the best 3 of them and resold the rest. In hindsight, Sabre fret buzz is partly caused by warped necks (longitudinal cross-twisting or uneven curve or not fully functional trussrods) and partly by neck-wood combinations. Some players will consider fret buzz a plus as an additional overtone or characteristic of a bass sound, but I personally consider it a major hindrance. Because of my rather strong right hand plucking attack, most basses I play will exhibit string buzz even with medium to high action (I always set up my basses with mid-high action to be able to really dig in). It's not entirely me, because exceptionally a bass will not have string buzz, e.g. my '76 Precision and the not-dated 5-string I use in my Level 42 videos, will NOT buzz, regardless of how hard I pluck the strings. So it has to do with the vibrations through body and neck, and the neck shape. The main reason why I hardly ever change strings is that new strings have more string buzz than older, dull strings. If you intend to buy a '79 Sabre for live purposes, fret buzz is not such a big deal as it will get absorbed in the general live sound of the band. But for studio and recording purposes, fret buzz can be too noticeable. So make sure to inform yourself about that aspect before buying a Sabre online, if you find the cleanliness of the sound important. Also make sure the onboard electronics have not been modified, and that the pickups are the originals. They have a fairly strong output. The only thing you should not worry about or for which you should not turn down a '78-'80 Sabre (or Stingray) is the state of the rubber string dampers on the bridge. They will invariably have been worn off due to age. To conclude: if you are a Louis Johnson of similar era slapping style fan and you were to purchase your first pre-EB first Sabre of Stingray, rest assured that from the first note you play you will enjoy the kick of revelling in the authentic sound of a Sabre as can be heard on many records from the late '70s to the early '80s. Excitement guaranteed ! I am lifelong hooked, that's for sure, and have been since the mid-'80s, irrespective of the tons of other basses I have played and owned.
This is the best and most satisfying bass play on UA-cam for any Chic songs. Hands down, perfectly executed! 🙌
I ❤ it 🎸🫨
Sweet!! That very last slide you did at the end sounded like a "whew!" to me, lol. Great timing and tone, dude. Louis would be proud
Head bobbin , shoulder shaking Bass!
I love it. Team Bass!
Make that bass, do what it do! Love it. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
This and car wash (movie) inspired me to buy a bass last week to finally learn at 58 years young.. I have been watching these videos every day since ❤☺️🙌🏼🎸
Well, congratuations, never to late to start ! And this is a simple song to play as well, so...
Genial !!!!
Fuck yeah !
Fretless Level 42 funk...nice ❤
Excellent
Wow, mate, you can play! Kudos! And-what a beauty is your P Bass!!!!
She's a real mature beauty yes, turning 50 in 2 years.
@@BelgaBass though not as blazoned, my old Eko fretless is in the same ballpark as far as age goes...they made them in Italy back then, and after a pick-up swap, it too feels and sounds like a charm!
Was just listening to old jams and decided to learn this basseline. Fantastic video, although I'm late.
It's never to late to return to solid basics ! Too much rubbish going around these days !
Nice 🥁😎🥁
muito bom ,amei!
Man I wish you lived in florida your right in the pocket.🥁😎🥁

That's why I love the jazz bass. It's that tone. Awesome playing.
Nice job, I loved Bernard Edward's bass playing on all Chic songs.
